AWiB Defines Excellence in Action

“If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” African Proverb

No matter what anyone tells you, success is nota lone journey and it is definitely not a static end zone. I believe that success is a continuous journey of mentorship, hardwork and support, working and reworking yourself into your very own definition of success all of which are central to AWiB. As we get ready to celebrate Women of Excellence 2017, I recognize there is a parallel between this concept of success and excellence. Excellence is also a moving ceiling of sorts, constantly challenging us to move forward each time our target is reached as anever expanding personal and collective objective, ever changing, a continuous challenge to be better and do better than we did yesterday.

As I reflect on my year with AWiB, I can unequivocally state that my experience has shown me that AWiB defines excellence trough action. It is trough defining our individual brand of excellence that we deliver excellence in AWiB, for each of us both are an interconnected loop feeding off each other.  I will be honest with you, when I accepted the invitation to live this transformative path last year and attended the WOE 2016 Galla dinner, I already had one foot out the door. As I was presented as a member of the new board, almost eight months pregnant and overwhelmed with the demands of new board membership, among other things, I did not understand what the fuss was about. I have no problem bluntly stating that I was dead wrong.

My journey with AWiB has been many things, but it was not a solitary one and it was most certainly not boring. Volunteering the AWiB way has been and still is a thoroughly transformative experience. From the very onset, my story affirms that Leadership, as with excellence, comes in different packages and it is definitely not a journey you embark on at a safe distance. The level of commitment and patience the women in AWiB extended to me the last year still amazes me. I sense they knew that my commitment at the beginning was hazy at best and yet they persisted while I had my baby then very slowly eased into the AWiB journey. Today, I can safely say that I am under construction, reconstructing myself slowly after deconstructing myself and savoring each precious step. A process I look forward to repeating throughout my lifetime.

I know that many come to AWiB hoping for a magic pill of transformative leadership. I hate to break it to you, but there is none. This is why AWiB is definitely not for everyone, especially if you are not willing to put in the work and face some ugly truths that come up along the way. There are no quick fixes here. When you join with transformation on the agenda, you should come for the long haul, ready to face your fears AND demons, inevitably blossoming into a woman that is beyond your wildest fantasies. AWiB is for the bold woman that takes trough giving and grows in excellence. It is when you give something of yourself, you get a back a something utterly tremendous and AWiB ALWAYS generously gives back. To be a part of this movement is to understand that it does not take a fancy title to be the embodiment of excellence in leadership, just some boldness, the will power to learn and grow and good friends that will tell it like it is.

AWiB would like to proudly acknowledge its partners for the year.
