Self-esteem is our subjective evaluation of our individual worth and how we see ourselves. A positive self-esteem enables us to navigate the ups and downs of life with our chin up and eyes forward looking. It allows us to have a balanced opinion of our capabilities and limitations. Whereas, a negative or low self-esteem makes us devalue our abilities and limits our contributions, stagnating our potential. It is noted that there are a number of factors that influence our self-esteem as it evolves from childhood. Most often, our self-esteem evolves based on our experiences. One of such factors that impacts self-esteem greatly is culture. Culture, itself an evolving construct, greatly shapes various aspects of the self, how we view ourselves and what we strive for and aim to accomplish. In this roundtable discussion we will discuss the role of culture in defining our self-esteem and explore which parts of our culture build and/or diminish our self-esteem as women.
