Miscarriage is one of the hardest things a woman can go through — and yet, it’s surprisingly common. According to the American Pregnancy Association, as many as 1 in 4 pregnancies will end in miscarriage. This statistics might be a bit higher for Ethiopia. And somehow, there’s still a silence around it. Women don’t like to talk about it. It’s undoubtedly a difficult situation for anyone that has to go through it, not to mention often heartbreaking as well.

Unsafe abortion is a crucial health problem in Ethiopia. Abortion also has been till recently the major culprit of maternal death in the country. As part of law reform in Ethiopia in 2005, the penal code was revised to broaden the indications under which abortion is permitted. Termination of pregnancy is now legal when the pregnancy results from rape or incest, when continuation of the pregnancy endangers the health or life of the woman or the fetus, in cases of fetal impairment, for women with physical or mental disabilities, for minors who are physically or psychologically unprepared to raise a child and in cases of grave and imminent danger that can be averted only through immediate pregnancy termination. These are significant changes from the previous law, which permitted abortion only in cases of grave and imminent danger that could be averted only through immediate pregnancy termination. These changes also have showed significant improvement in minimizing the high rate of maternal death in the country.

Talking points:

  • Could miscarriage be prevented?
  • How could a society understand when a woman is forced to make often difficult & traumatic decision such as induced abortion?
  • What are the safe options available for induced abortion?
  • How can a woman be supported so she doesn’t need to face these difficult situations?
  • What kind of information is available and where?
  • What are husbands’ or life partners’ responsibilities so a woman wouldn’t face such predicament alone?
  • What are the health professionals’ responsibilities and are they equipped to honor their responsibilities?

Join Dr. Munir and his medical team to shade light on this difficult and emotionally draining subject. Come to AWiB and be enlightened. Giving birth is a gift and must be a joyous experience.
