Achieving An Intrinsic Purpose

AWiB Congratulates Meti on her new venture in the media business.

Metasebia Shewaye Yilma, a.k.a. Meti, has premiered her 2 television shows on LTV in April 2017; Let’s Go With Meti (???? ??? ??) and With Meti (??? ?? ). Meti’s travel and interview shows have started adorning the screens of LTV, the newest TV channel on NileSat (Frequency-11096 H, Symbol- 27500, FEC-5/6).

Let’s Go With Meti (???? ??? ??) is an experiential travel show in which Meti explores like a tourist and experiences like a local to promote the concept of conscious travelling. Let’s Go With Meti (???? ??? ??) is a well-researched informative and adventurous travel series that exposes hidden gems, celebrates heritages, creates excitement and takes viewers off the beaten tracks. In the episodes, Meti is seen hanging out with locals, trying daring activities, uncovering least known features and telling other sides of stories. In the first two months, Meti will promote Addis Ababa for the foodies, history lovers, art enthusiasts, adrenaline junkies and shopaholics. In the following two months, Meti will take her audience to the outskirts of Addis for one-day-trips to show various places and activities that can capture the interests of diverse travellers. Then gradually Let's Go With Meti (???? ??? ??) will take the audience farther into Ethiopia as well as cross borders.

“The test of an organization is not genius. It is its capacity to make common people achieve uncommon performance”. ~Peter Drucker~

Any organization- whether it is a non-for-profit,a large multinational serving millions of people across continents or a small startup that employs less than a dozen people –is ultimately driven by the performance of its employees; if it is not only to survive but thrive in its endeavors. Organizational performance, however, is contingent upon a number of factors; among which employee engagement is one of the most important considerations.

AWiB congratulates its 2013 President and member, Billene Seyoum, for launching Earuyan Solutions.

In Geez, an ancient South Semitic language and precursor to Amharic, Earuyan means ‘equality’. Earuyan Solutions is a social impact driven company offering the following services for projects already promoting or wanting to integrate gender equality consciousness into their work:

In the February issue of AWiB Effect, we would like celebrate togetherness with the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE), that has been a solid AWiB partner since 2013, recommitting to the journey together in 2017. Established in 1942, CBE is a pioneering bank to introduce modern banking to Ethiopia. With more than 8.5 million account holders, CBE has since 2014 launched a special women’s account which entitle women to a higher interest rate than the convention interest rate.

As an avid supporter of AWiB’s mission and vision, we struck a brief conversation withSeifu Bogale, VP of Human Resources to understand how they are promoting gender equality.

AWiB expresses its appreciation to those dedicated members who have made it to 5 years mark. These individuals have seen AWiB through thick and thin and we express our appreciation for their support and trust in AWiB as an institution throughout the years.

Fashion week is a big part of Hub of Africa.

The Fashion week offers tremendous scope for the African countries designers to participate in regional and global integration. In Addis Fashion week 2016 which was held in Millennium hall on the 6th of October, more than 12 African Designers Participated. Among this twelve plus Designers Arkies leather was one of the participants.

Arkies leather, designer Semhal Guesh was chosen to accessorize the fashion show out of the leather accessories designers in Ethiopia overall. This was a break for Arkies leather in the terms of exposure and recognition to the glamorous design world as it is a young company in Ethiopia. This also has helped this new startup designer for her to see and learn and keep learning from the designers participating in the fashion show create contact, market linkage, largely see outside the norm and design for the future with the tools to cater to the African fashion and the rest of the world.

AWiB congratulates Birkti Kahsay on her promotion to a Branch Manager at Wegagen Bank S.C.

Birikti has worked her way up from teller to having her own branch in a few short years. Birikti, as young as a high school girl started working for her family business with greater responsibility one would give to a 15 year old girl. She tells us that she used to work for her family business with full responsibility; and from that experience at a very young age she learned what helped her: to be proactive, to think critically and to forecast future trends. She also learned the importance of commitment, punctuality and devotion to work.

However, Birikti learned the importance of self-worth, self-love and self-care after she joined AWiB. She learned that unless you are good to yourself, you can’t be a good mother, a good daughter, a good wife or even a good friend. She says “unlike the commitment that I had to my job I wasn't paying attention or giving time to myself; I thought the responsibility of kids and house chores was solely mine which created a great deal of conflict and anger within me and through the process, I lost my self except the focus and commitment I had for my job”.

There is nothing more valuable than education

Women from PROJECT-E Hospitality Institute talk about their development after having accomplished their second internship within the program

Thanks to previous volunteers from PROJECT-E, who are studying at the same university in Germany as I do, I heard about this non-profit organization that supports women in Ethiopia. My fellow students explained that PROJECT-E provides young women without financial means with a higher level education, always following the mission of “empowering women”. I became so impressed by this strong incentive and social approach that I applied to volunteer for PROJECT-E myself. Since May I am authorized to support the organization, the staff, and the students with my knowledge and skills as best as I can. However, I feel like I have learned much more from them than they have from me.
