AWiB’s board member Sewit on the move

Sewit Haileselassie has been invited to participate in the validation consultation for the Progress study in Youth, Peace and Security” to take place in New York in November. Sewit along with another participant from Kenya, Michael Opondo, will be representing Eastern and Southern Africa to discuss the findings and recommendations identified by the study. The two participants were selected form 17 participants of the Eastern and Southern African consultation to ensure the discussions that took place in Johannesburg, South Africa during the consultation are well represented.

The UN Security Council Resolution 2250 , which was adopted in December 2015 referencing the Women, Peace and security agenda, acknowledges that today’s population of youth is the” largest the world has ever known”. The resolution also expressed concern that youth are the most adversely affected by armed conflict while also recognizing the role that young people play in peace building; acknowledging that to involve young people in the peace building process, they must in turn be recognized as stakeholders. The resolution calls for “inclusive and youth friendly policies” to tapped into the potential of youth today in order to build sustainable peace and economic development.

WISE’s 20th year anniversary

Organization for Women in Self Employment (WISE) is an Ethiopian residents’ charity registered with the Ministry of Justice in August, 1997. It commenced its full programme operation in January, 1998. WISE is dedicated to the development of women and girls in their efforts to become empowered, build resilient families, and emerge active players and beneficiaries in the development of Ethiopia.

Did you know that as Diasporas we sent more than $65 billion in remittances to the continent in 2016? What if just 1% of that remittance money was directed into a crisis relief and recovery investment fund? Act4 wants to move the conversation on giving from aid to investment. We want development in Africa to be shaped by Africans and her Diaspora. So we’re charging the Diaspora to Rise Up!

Beginning in August 2017, during Black Philanthropy month, we’ll begin raising more than $200,000 to provide aid for immediate hunger and humanitarian crises in the Lake Chad and Horn of Africa Regions and Sierra Leone. We’ll partner with NGOs on the continent to provide funds and resource support to assist in addressing emerging humanitarian and development crises. And for the long-term, we’ll recruit members of the diaspora for skills-based, pro-bono volunteering with our NGO partners. For more information, to donate or to partner, check out our website at diasporariseup.org.

“The test of an organization is not genius. It is its capacity to make common people achieve uncommon performance”. ~Peter Drucker~

Any organization- whether it is a non-for-profit,a large multinational serving millions of people across continents or a small startup that employs less than a dozen people –is ultimately driven by the performance of its employees; if it is not only to survive but thrive in its endeavors. Organizational performance, however, is contingent upon a number of factors; among which employee engagement is one of the most important considerations.

AWiB congratulates its 2013 President and member, Billene Seyoum, for launching Earuyan Solutions.

In Geez, an ancient South Semitic language and precursor to Amharic, Earuyan means ‘equality’. Earuyan Solutions is a social impact driven company offering the following services for projects already promoting or wanting to integrate gender equality consciousness into their work:
