AWiB Listens: Being a Woman in Contemporary Ethiopia

‘AWiB Listens’ is an evening of life-giving conversations that you can shape. AWiB is inviting you for the fourth time this January and AWiB will listen.

Held in the past four years, it received a significant response from members and non-members, as it challenged one’s mind at different levels and fostered friendships that are still evolving.

Again, this World Café will enable those present to network with women who have never met before, but have something in common. This year AWiB President Metasebia Shewaye Yilma and Sewit Haileselassie will be facilitating this unique conversation.

Ethiopian culture prides itself in celebrating women as mothers and the gatekeepers of society and culture. However, with evolving time, what it is to be a woman is also changing. Leaving us to ask, what is it to be a woman in contemporary Ethiopian society and what role does AWiB play? What are our unique qualities as Ethiopian Women? What are the unique challenges and opportunities for women in our current day and age? Where will we be when we overcome our challenges? What is the AWiB’s role in all this? In the conversations, we will explore great ways how, as Women in Ethiopian Contemporary Society, we can support each other more, to fulfil our dreams and the role AWiB plays to facilitate that transformation.

What is a World Café?

We are all affected by our busy and tight schedules. AWiB is creating this platform for women to step out of their busy lives, be innovative in thinking, and meet others who would support them as they grow as leaders.

World Café is a tool that will give space for life-giving conversations. The methodology, created by Juanita Brown and David Isaacs in the late 1990s, aims to foster collaborative dialogue, sharing mutual knowledge, and discovering new opportunities for action. The objective of the session is to enable authentic reflections to be made in a safe and transparent environment.

How does World Café work?

How does this methodology work, what will be expected of you on January 4th and what should you expect from the facilitator?

You will encounter:

  1. Small Group Rounds: The process begins with the first of three or more twenty-minute rounds of conversation for the small group seated around a table. At the end of the twenty minutes, each member of the group moves to a different new table. They may or may not choose to leave one person as the "table host" for the next round, who welcomes the next group and briefly fills them in on what happened in the previous round.

  2. Questions: each round is prefaced with a question designed for the specific context and desired purpose of the session. Subsequent questions will build on previous ones to focus the conversation or guide its direction.

  3. Harvest: After the small groups, individuals are invited to share insights or other results from their conversations in plenary.
